Why Manchester United Desperately Needs Rising Star Desire Doue on Their Left Wing

The name Desire Doue translates to ‘desired gift,’ which seems fitting considering the high interest in the young Stade Rennais player.

At just 18, Doue is already recognized as one of the brightest young talents in European football. Despite his youth, Doue has a strong physical presence and is known for his skillful use of both feet and powerful striking ability. This has already attracted the attention of top Premier League clubs, including Arsenal and Manchester United, with an estimated transfer fee of around €35.5 million. Current Transfer Value of Desire Doue According to FootballTransfer's Player Valuation Model, Doue currently has an Estimated Transfer Value (ETV) of €21 million. Additionally, he is ranked as the fifth best future French player globally. Why Arsenal and Man Utd Are Interested in Desire Doue What makes Desire Doue special? Doue is often compared to Wayne Rooney for his strength on the ball, but his playing style is more reminiscent of Zinedine Zidane. Like Zidane, Doue is proficient with both feet and has a powerful long-range shot. He exudes confidence and has the ball-carrying ability of an elite player. Doue thrives in tight spaces, using his quick feet to maneuver out of trouble.

Last season, Doue predominantly played on the left wing, excelling at delivering the ball into central areas of the box. While Zidane was known for his precise passing into dangerous areas, Doue adds flair with deft touches and back-heels that find teammates in space. At just 17, Doue became the youngest goal scorer in Stade Rennais' history in European competition. This is particularly impressive given the club’s history of producing talents like Ousmane Dembele, Eduardo Camavinga, and Mathys Tel, who have all moved on to top-tier clubs. Rennes midfielder Baptiste Santamaria praised Doue in an interview with TNT Sports, highlighting his unique blend of technical, physical, and percussive qualities. "He's one of a kind: he likes to hit the ball but he's solid on his feet. Desire's technical, percussive and physical qualities are quite incredible. When he becomes more consistent, he'll be unplayable. For his age, he's the most gifted youngster I've seen in my career." According to WhoScored, Doue excels in dribbling, long shots, and defensive contributions, with nine goal contributions in 40 games and four Player of the Match awards. Notably, 14 of his 31 appearances for Rennais came as a substitute. WhoScored statistics reveal that Doue averages 2.3 shots and 3.4 successful dribbles per 90 minutes, from 5.8 attempts. As an attacker, he also attempts three tackles per 90 minutes, succeeding in 1.8 of those. This versatility has led Rennais coach Julien Stephan to use Doue in various roles, including as a No.10 and No.8.

Why Manchester United Need a Player Like Doue on the Left Wing
Manchester United could greatly benefit from a player like Desire Doue on the left wing. Currently, United has struggled to find consistency and creativity from their wide players. Doue's ability to deliver precise balls into the box and his knack for creating opportunities with flair and technical skills would provide a significant boost to their attacking options.

His strength and dribbling skills would also add a new dimension to United's offensive play, making it harder for defenses to contain their attacks. Additionally, Doue’s versatility allows him to adapt to different roles, giving the team tactical flexibility. His confidence in tight spaces and ability to drive the ball forward could help unlock stubborn defenses, a skill United has often lacked in recent seasons. His defensive contributions and work rate would also align with the high-pressing style that United's manager seeks to implement. Doue is under contract with Roazhon Park until 2026 but has already drawn interest from notable clubs. Whether he will move this summer is uncertain, especially as it could reduce his playing time next season. Nonetheless, Rennais has a future star whose potential seems limitless.
